It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of this legendary actor
A legendary Hollywood actor has passed away at the age of 89, as confirmed by his niece, Noreen Austin. The beloved star had been battling ongoing cardiac issues and quietly passed away at home, surrounded by his family. In recent years, he spent much of his time reflecting on his life, enjoying old films, playing his guitar, and immersing himself in jazz music.
This actor’s career spanned over decades, beginning as a child in the late 1930s. His debut came in an uncredited role in Bridal Suite in 1939, which marked the start of an impressive journey in Hollywood. He went on to appear in nearly 150 productions, including some of the most iconic films and TV series of the ’60s and ’70s.
Known for his powerful performances in In Cold Blood and the hit show Baretta, his portrayal of the tough, street-smart detective earned him four Emmy nominations and one win. His final major acting role came in the 1997 thriller Lost Highway.
However, his life took a tragic turn in 2001 when his second wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, was found murdered. The shocking crime and the subsequent accusations against the actor rocked the world. He was charged with her murder 11 months after her death, with many stunned by the allegations. Though he consistently denied any involvement and maintained that he had left Bakley in the car and returned to find her dead, the case became a media spectacle.
In 2005, after a lengthy trial, he was found not guilty of the murder, yet the ordeal severely impacted his career and public image, which never fully recovered. Despite the controversies of his later years, his contributions to the film and television industry remain undeniable, and his legacy as a Hollywood icon endures. Rest in peace to this remarkable star.
