Frank Fritz, “American Pickers” star, dead at 60 — rest in peace
Fans were heartbroken to learn of the passing of Frank Fritz, the beloved antiques expert from the reality series American Pickers, at the age of 60. Fritz, who left the show in 2021, had faced numerous health challenges in recent years, including a stroke that hospitalized him two years ago.
The news of his passing was shared by his long-time friend and co-star, Mike Wolfe, who revealed that Fritz passed away the previous night. Wolfe paid tribute to his friend on social media, reflecting on the many years they spent together both on and off screen. “I’ve known Frank for more than half my life, and what you saw on TV was exactly who he was—a dreamer with a big heart who made people laugh,” Wolfe wrote. “He was the same person off-camera, and his authenticity touched so many people.”
Fritz and Wolfe rose to fame as the hosts of American Pickers, which debuted on the History Channel in 2010. The show followed the two “pickers” as they traveled across the U.S., searching for valuable antiques in barns, garages, and unexpected places. Their infectious chemistry and passion for unearthing hidden treasures made the series a massive hit, drawing millions of viewers. By the end of its first season, it was the #1 non-fiction show among total viewers and adults aged 25-54.
Though American Pickers focused on discovering antiques, it was undoubtedly the dynamic between Fritz and Wolfe that kept fans coming back. Their camaraderie and lighthearted banter made the show as much about friendship as it was about forgotten relics of history.
Fritz’s departure from the show in 2021 was abrupt. In an interview, he explained that he didn’t choose to leave but was let go after a back surgery and during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also hinted at tension with Wolfe, stating that the show had become more centered on his co-host. “I haven’t talked to Mike in two years,” Fritz shared in 2021, expressing disappointment that Wolfe hadn’t reached out during his recovery.
In July 2022, Fritz suffered a stroke, which further complicated his health. Though the two co-hosts had a tearful reunion in 2023, resolving their previous differences, Fritz ultimately decided to focus on his health and declined an offer to rejoin American Pickers.
Despite their past conflicts, it was clear that Wolfe and Fritz remained close. Wolfe, deeply affected by Fritz’s passing, wrote, “We’ve shared countless trips and so many miles, and I’m grateful I was there with him when he took one last journey home. I love you, buddy, and will miss you every day. I know you’re in a better place.”
Tributes poured in from other cast members as well, including Danielle Colby, who shared her memories of Fritz. “Frank, I’ll miss your laughter, your love for tattoos, and your amazing collections. But what I’ll miss most are those rare glimpses of vulnerability,” she wrote, ending her tribute with, “Rest in Peace, Road Dog.”
As American Pickers continues to air, Fritz’s legacy as an iconic reality TV star lives on, remembered not just for the antiques he unearthed, but for the joy he brought to viewers and the friendships he cherished. Rest in peace, Frank Fritz.
