Recipe – How to Make Indian Frybread (Bhatura)
Preparation Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 4-6 people
Ingredients
- 2 cups All-Purpose Flour (Maida)
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 2 tablespoons Yogurt
- 1 tablespoon Sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- Water, as required
- Oil, for frying
Method
- Mixing and Kneading: In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
- Adding Yogurt: Add yogurt to the dry ingredients. Gradually knead the dough, adding water as needed, until a smooth, elastic dough forms.
- Resting the Dough: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 1 hour. This allows the dough to rise and develop gluten, resulting in softer frybread.
- Shaping and Frying: Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions. Roll each portion into a thin, round disc.
- Frying: Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of dough into it – it should float to the top almost immediately.
- Frying the Frybread: Carefully slide the rolled dough into the hot oil. Press gently with a slotted spoon to help it puff up. Fry until both sides are golden brown.
- Draining and Serving: Remove the frybread from the oil using a slotted spoon. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serving Suggestions: Serve hot with Chole (spicy chickpea curry) or drizzle with honey and sprinkle with powdered sugar for a sweet treat.
