What Causes Oven Doors to Shatter and How Can You Avoid It?


Oven doors can shatter due to two primary factors: the type of glass used and inherent imperfections within it. Most ovens utilize either tempered soda lime glass, which is less resistant to thermal changes, or sturdy borosilicate glass.

However, even with durable glass, small flaws such as nickel sulfide inclusions can lead to spontaneous breakage, especially during high heat cycles like self-cleaning. To prevent such incidents, it’s crucial to handle oven doors delicately, refrain from using abrasive cleaning tools or placing heavy items on the door, and ensure that dishes inside the oven do not come into contact with the glass.
