“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that, following an accident, he has left us!”
A 44-year-old former NFL star, who gained recognition during his time with the Cleveland Browns, has tragically died in a car accident. Today marks his funeral, as reported by local news source Akron Beacon Journal.
The former running back, who played for the Browns in the 2001 season, became a fan favorite with a memorable performance against the Super Bowl-winning Baltimore Ravens, scoring a crucial touchdown that contributed to the Browns’ 27–17 victory. Despite this highlight, his NFL career included only one other touchdown.
After his football career, he worked as a welder and remained active in his community. He was married to Margarita in February 2012, and they had three children together—a son, two daughters, and a granddaughter. A devoted Christian, he was involved with Platte Valley Baptist Church in Fort Morgan, Colorado.
Born Benjamin Stevenson Gay Jr. in Houston, Texas, he was named a USA Today first-team All-American after graduating from Spring High School. He continued his education at Baylor University and Garden City Community College, eventually earning a Master’s degree in Biology. Prior to his time in the NFL, he played for the Edmonton Eskimos in Canada.
Tributes have poured in on social media, with many reflecting on his impact both on and off the field. Friends and fans have expressed their sorrow and shared fond memories of his contributions as a player and his personal qualities. The Associated Press has confirmed the car accident, but further details are not yet available.
The Rowanoak Mortuary & Crematory in Fort Morgan, Colorado, is handling the funeral arrangements. Additional information about the memorial service will be announced soon.
