How people view beauty in American and the world at large
The concept of beauty is evolving, with social media playing a significant role in celebrating diversity and empowering women to embrace their natural beauty in all shapes and sizes. A recent study published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education highlights this cultural shift, revealing that the average American woman now wears a size 16 to 18, a notable increase from the size 14 of previous years.
The study, which examined data from over 5,500 U.S. women, reported that the average waist size has grown from 34.9 inches to 37.5 inches over the past two decades. Susan Dunn, a lead researcher on the study, underscores the importance of these findings: “Understanding where the average lies can significantly impact women’s self-esteem and body image.”
Dunn, along with co-author Deborah Christel, is urging the fashion industry to adapt to these changes. “These women aren’t going anywhere,” Dunn asserts. “They deserve clothing that fits and celebrates their bodies.”
The takeaway is clear: the fashion industry must update its sizing standards to reflect the reality of the modern American woman, embracing her true shape and size. This shift is not just about inclusivity but about acknowledging and honoring the diverse beauty of all women.
