Zoe Ball, the trailblazing first female host of both the Radio 1 and Radio 2 breakfast shows, has shared the heartbreaking news of her mother Julia Peckham’s passing after a battle with cancer.

A Family’s Final Days Together

Following Julia’s devastating cancer diagnosis, Zoe took time away from work to care for her mother and cherish their remaining moments together. During her absence, Gaby Roslin stepped in as her replacement.

In an earlier heartfelt social media post, Zoe expressed her gratitude for the medical staff and her family’s support during this challenging time:
“Heartbreakingly, our beautiful Mama Julia has been diagnosed with cancer. These are incredibly tough times, as many of you will understand. Mum is being so brave.

“My brother Jamie and I are in complete awe of the brilliant doctors, nurses, and support teams caring for her. Thank you to everyone—our families, extended family, friends, and colleagues—for their love and support during this time.”

A Tribute to Her Mother

On Wednesday, Zoe shared the devastating update on X (formerly Twitter) that her mother had passed away, writing:
“We are bereft without you but will hold so tight to each other. Thank you for teaching us how to love unconditionally, to show courage and empathy, and how, even in the darkest of days, laughter is the greatest gift.”

Julia spent her final days in hospice care, surrounded by love and comfort.

A Repaired Relationship

Zoe has previously opened up about her estranged relationship with her mother. When her parents divorced, five-year-old Zoe stayed with her father, children’s TV presenter Johnny Ball, and did not see her mother for 14 years.

The two reconnected in Zoe’s late twenties, beginning with Julia’s 40th birthday party, an event Zoe hesitantly attended. Their relationship blossomed, and they grew exceptionally close in the years that followed.
