Old Man Sells Shabby Suitcase, Everyone Ignores Him except Lame Boy Who Agrees to Buy It
A young man named Martin Farmer went to the flea market looking for old music tapes, hoping to bring a little joy into his otherwise difficult life. At seventeen, Martin had already faced more challenges than most people his age. After losing his father two years earlier, he became the man of the house, caring for his ailing mother while balancing school, work, and a limp from a motorcycle accident that dashed his dreams of a football career—and with it, his college hopes.
Money was always tight, so Martin worked long hours after school and on weekends to help cover his mom’s medical bills. But once a month, he allowed himself a small indulgence: taking $5 from his savings to hunt for old music tapes at the flea market. This Sunday morning, he was particularly tired after a tough week and was looking forward to a rare break from his worries.
As he sorted through tapes at his favorite vendor’s stall, Martin noticed an elderly man setting up next door with a pile of old suitcases and bags. The man, in a raspy voice, tried to attract customers: “Suitcases, bags, and briefcases! Only five dollars apiece! A bargain for anyone with an eye for treasure!”
The crowd wasn’t kind. A woman passing by sneered, dismissing the suitcases as “junk,” and another man mocked the old man, saying he’d never sell any of it. But the old man shook his head and replied, “Someone will come along because this suitcase right here—it’s full of hope. It might look like an ordinary bag, but it’s got dreams inside.”
Intrigued, Martin looked up and couldn’t help but smile. “I could use a little hope myself,” he said. “How much for that dream come true?”
The old man’s face brightened. “For you, it’s just $5.” Martin reached into his pocket and handed over his last five-dollar bill. The old man gripped his hand warmly. “You’re a kind young man,” he said. “You deserve every bit of what’s coming your way.”
The suitcase was surprisingly heavy, and Martin bid the music stall goodbye, promising to come back next month. At home, his mother immediately scolded him for bringing “another piece of junk” into the house, but he couldn’t shake his curiosity. He took the suitcase to the garage and opened it. Inside, wrapped in layers of old newspaper, were bundles upon bundles of cash—stacks of $20 bills. Martin’s hands shook as he peeled away the paper. Altogether, there was $300,000.
When he called his mother over, she was stunned. That night, they counted the money over and over, hardly believing their luck. “This is enough for your school, my medication, and more,” she whispered. But Martin couldn’t rest. “Mom, I didn’t earn this money, and I don’t think the old man knew what was in that suitcase. He sold it to me for only five dollars.”
His mother agreed they had to find him. So for weeks, Martin returned to the flea market, searching for the mysterious old man. One day, as he walked through the crowded market, he spotted him at a bus stop with another old suitcase.
Martin ran up to him. “Sir! I have to give the suitcase back. It was filled with money—your money!”
The old man chuckled knowingly. “I know, son. I told you it was full of hope and dreams come true. That money was meant for you, to help you on your way. Use it well.”
Martin stared in shock. “But I thought you were struggling. I thought you needed the money.”
The man smiled. “I’ve spent a lifetime accumulating wealth, more than anyone could ever need. Now, I want to share it with those who show kindness and compassion.” With that, the man walked away, leaving Martin to marvel at his incredible fortune.
That day, Martin and his mother decided to use the money to ease her illness, secure Martin’s education, and give themselves a fresh start. And every night, they included the “Suitcase Man” in their prayers, grateful for the kindness that had changed their lives.
