A beloved lifeguard and surf instructor, who once appeared in Hollywood blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean and Blue Crush, tragically lost his life in a shocking shark attack on Oahu’s North Shore. The terrifying incident unfolded during what should have been a routine day in paradise, leaving the surfing community and his loved ones devastated. Perry, who had served as a lifeguard with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years, was widely respected on the North Shore. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed his condolences in a statement:

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our incredibly dedicated City and County of Honolulu lifeguards, who tragically lost his life today in an apparent shark attack on the North Shore. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues in Ocean Safety during this incredibly difficult time.”

Blangiardi further emphasized Perry’s bravery and commitment: “He exemplified courage, commitment, and a deep sense of duty, serving our community with unwavering dedication. His heroic actions and tireless efforts to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors will never be forgotten.”

The Honolulu Emergency Services Department reported that the incident occurred just before 1 p.m. local time on June 23, near Goat Island. A surfer was reported to have been “fatally injured” in a shark attack, and emergency services were quickly alerted. The caller described the victim as having multiple bite wounds. Lifeguards brought Perry’s body ashore using a Jet Ski, but tragically, paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

During a press conference, Acting Chief Kurt Lager of Honolulu Ocean Safety expressed the deep loss felt by the community: “Tamayo Perry was a lifeguard loved by all.”

Emilia Perry, his wife and fellow surfer, spoke through her grief: “Though his passing is tragic, he left this world doing what he loved, in the place he loved.”

Perry was known for his exceptional talent at Pipeline, one of the most famous surf breaks in the world, located off Ehukai Beach Park on Oahu’s North Shore. Surfer magazine highlighted his expertise, while the Encyclopedia of Surfing noted that Perry was close friends with musician Jack Johnson. Raised on Oahu’s east side, Perry and his wife ran a surf school together, inspiring and teaching young surfers in their community.

On Monday, the surfing community poured out tributes, mourning the loss of Perry. Legendary surfer Kelly Slater posted a heartfelt message: “This one is hard to believe… You truly lived the life you loved.”
