Two university students found dead in dorm in murder-su1c1de

Authorities in Wisconsin are investigating a tragic incident at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville that has shaken the campus to its core. On the afternoon of Monday, May 19, campus police responded to a call from Wilgus Hall, where they discovered two students, both 22 years old, suffering from gunshot wounds. Hallie Helms, an elementary education major, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelsie Martin, a psychology major and assistant resident director, was taken to Southwest Health and later airlifted to UW Hospital in Madison, where she died from her injuries.

Autopsy results revealed a grim conclusion: Martin had been fatally shot, while Helms’ wound was self-inflicted. Investigators now believe the incident was a murder-suicide that occurred around 4 p.m. on campus. Authorities have found no evidence of involvement by any other individuals.

Just two days before the tragedy, Helms and Martin had celebrated their graduation, their names proudly listed in the spring commencement program. What should have been the beginning of a bright future instead ended in devastating loss, leaving behind grief, confusion, and painful questions.

In the aftermath, the university canceled all final exams for the rest of the week and quickly mobilized to provide mental health support for students, faculty, and staff. Counseling services were expanded across campus, and messages of solidarity poured in from across the state.

The university expressed its gratitude on social media, writing, “We are overwhelmed by your kindness. We are a close community, and this outpouring of care is a powerful reminder of who we are. We do not take it for granted. #PioneerStrong.”

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers also released a statement offering condolences and support, saying, “We will continue to remain in close contact with university officials. Please keep the UW-Platteville community in your thoughts during this heartbreaking time.”

As the investigation continues, officials are working to understand the relationship between the two women and any signs that might have foreshadowed the violence. Meanwhile, the campus community is left to process the shock and mourn the loss of two young lives, reflecting deeply on the importance of mental health, safety, and compassion in an environment meant to nurture growth and hope.
