Elephant finally rescued after over 80 years in shackles, finally lays down and rest

Elephants are not meant to be confined in chains, yet many are still exploited and paraded like circus attractions—a practice that is both shocking and unacceptable. Fortunately, awareness is growing, and positive change is on the horizon.
Consider the story of Grandma Somboon, an elephant whose life is a testament to both cruelty and resilience. Kidnapped as a young calf from her natural habitat, Somboon endured over 80 years of brutal labor in Thailand’s logging and tourism industries. Like countless other elephants, she was forcibly separated from her family and subjected to a life of performing in shows, begging on the streets, and providing riding services. Day after day, she toiled on her feet, her freedom sacrificed in the name of profit, all driven by the insatiable demand of tourists.
When the Save Elephant Foundation learned of Somboon’s plight, they immediately knew something had to be done. Their call for action was clear: “It’s time for Grandma to be cared for well and allowed to rest. We’re on a rescue mission to protect Somboon and transport her to her final true home.” In January, the organization successfully rescued the now 87-year-old elephant. After a lifetime of toil, Somboon was finally freed from her chains, though her physical state was heartbreaking. Emaciated, missing a tooth, with hazy eyes and severe dehydration, and with skin in poor condition, she needed urgent care. Still, her safety and the promise of a dignified life were the most important gains.
Upon arriving at the Elephant Nature Park sanctuary, Somboon defied expectations. While many rescued elephants—plagued by years of abuse—take weeks to build trust and relax enough to lie down, she wasted no time. Exhausted from her arduous journey and a life filled with hardship, she immediately sought out the sand pile prepared for her and slept soundly amid the activity around her. For an elephant who had spent her life on her feet, the simple act of lying down was an essential first step in healing. Older elephants, with their fragile joints, need soft, comfortable environments to rest properly after enduring years of forced labor on hard surfaces.
The sanctuary has provided Somboon with everything she needs: nutritious food, clean water, and soft sand beds designed for her comfort. Although she still requires daily care and attention, she is making noticeable progress every day. Her gradual recovery is a testament to her remarkable resilience, and it’s clear that she is finally experiencing the respect and freedom she deserves.
Somboon’s story is a powerful reminder of the spirit of these magnificent creatures. Despite a lifetime marred by exploitation and pain, she is now beginning to find solace and healing in a sanctuary that champions her well-being. Her journey represents not just a rescue from physical chains, but a reclaiming of dignity—a chance for an elephant to live out her remaining years in peace and comfort.
