Jill Biden reveals she sent private note to Melania Trump after she broke major First Lady tradition

Following the November presidential elections, which Donald Trump won, First Lady Jill Biden extended a traditional invitation to Melania Trump for tea at the White House—a custom shared between incoming and outgoing First Ladies during the presidential transition. However, reports suggest that Melania declined the offer.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Jill Biden expressed disappointment over the broken tradition. “I congratulated her and offered my help,” Jill shared. “What would be the point of nastiness?” Despite the declined invitation, Jill followed up by sending a note to Melania through President Biden when the two leaders met at the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in December.

The two First Ladies eventually crossed paths at former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral on January 9, where Jill noted that Melania thanked her during their brief pleasantries.

In December 2024, Melania Trump appeared on Fox & Friends and addressed the transition process. She emphasized that this time, the handover would be smoother. “The first time was challenging; we didn’t have much of the information,” she said. “The information was withheld from us by the previous administration. But this time, I have everything—it’s a very different transition the second time around.”

During the same interview, host Brian Kilmeade asked Melania if she might consider gracing magazine covers once again as First Lady.

“You’re in the White House, and you’re not on the cover of any of these magazines. Do you think that will change? And would you say yes to them—Vogue, People, whatever?” he asked.

Melania, a former model who has appeared on numerous magazine covers in the past, replied, “Look, I’ve been there—on the cover of Vogue and many other magazines before. We have so many more important things to do than to be on the cover of a magazine. I think life wouldn’t change for anyone if I were on the cover.”

Some interpreted her remark as a subtle jab at Jill Biden, who was featured on the cover of Vogue in August during her time as First Lady.

Despite the underlying tensions, President Biden and Jill Biden are expected to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, continuing the tradition of peaceful transitions of power.
