A son took his mother to a nursing home, where he visited her from time to time. One day he was called because his mother was not feeling well

Do we ever pause to reflect on the saying, “What goes around, comes around”? Too often, we act without fully considering the consequences our choices have on others. Yet, life has a way of teaching us the importance of compassion and thoughtfulness.

After his father passed away, a man decided he could no longer care for his aging mother. Reluctantly, he placed her in a nursing home. She was unhappy there, and his visits were infrequent and brief.

One day, the nursing home called with grave news—his mother’s health had sharply declined. She was nearing the end of her life.

Rushing to her bedside, the son asked if there was anything he could do to bring her comfort. Looking him in the eye, she replied with a few heartfelt requests. Eager to fulfill her wishes, he assured her he would do whatever she asked.

She began softly, “The fans in my room don’t work well, and there were nights I struggled to breathe. If you could replace the refrigerator too… some days I went hungry because the food had spoiled.”

Her words stunned him. He hadn’t realized she endured such hardships. “Why didn’t you tell me this before?” he asked, overwhelmed with regret. “It’s too late now.”

His mother’s gaze didn’t waver as she said, “I know I’m dying. But I’m not saying this for myself—I’m thinking of you. One day, your children may place you in a home like this. When that day comes, I want you to have better conditions. What you give is what you get… don’t ever forget that.”

Her words shattered his heart. The weight of his choices pressed down on him, and he realized the deep mistake he’d made in neglecting his mother’s needs.

This story serves as a poignant reminder: it is our duty to ensure our parents live their later years in comfort, dignity, and happiness.
